¿Continuidad o abandono escolar? El efecto de los centros educativos en las decisiones de continuidad formativa de los jóvenes

El objetivo general del proyecto es analizar el rol que juegan los centros educativos y el profesorado en las decisiones de continuidad formativa de los jóvenes. Para ello, se desarrolla un intenso trabajo etnográfico en cinco institutos públicos de la cuidad de Barcelona que incluye entrevistas a equipos directivos, profesorado, alumnado y familias; grupos de discusión; observación de aula y de reuniones pedagógicas; análisis documental; y análisis de datos estadísticos del Departamento de Educación.

Early school leaving in Spain. An analysis of young people’s decisions, motivations and educational strategies

Reducing early school leaving (ESL) is one of the largest and most important challenges faced by European countries in general and Spain in particular. The high rates of school dropout at the end of compulsory secondary schooling not only hinder the social integration of those who suffer it, but above all reduce national productivity and competitiveness, put at risk the levels of equity and jeopardize social cohesion. An in-depth study of this phenomenon is of crucial importance when competitiveness, social cohesion and economic and social progress of the country are at stake.

THE DECENTRALISATION OF EDUCATION IN SPAIN

This project develops a comparative analysis of education policies of the seventeen Autonomous Communities in Spain. The project reviews the specific historical context in which the process of educational decentralisation took place in Spain and places the Spanish education system in its international context. Several dimensions of regional education systems are analysed, including differences in educational results and a typology of educational regimes based on different modes of educational provision.

THE MEASURE OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

This project aims to provide an analytical framework to discuss different dimensions of educational development as a preliminary work to test a composite index to measure educational development over time. The working paper will have necessarily an exploratory character. It is expected to serve as an internal discussion paper within UNESCO and to provide the basis for a wider project on the topic.

In the World Education Conferences celebrated in Jomtien (1990) and Dakar (2000), governments, international organizations, donors, and civil society organizations committed themselves to provide quality and relevant Education for All (EFA) by 2015. However, the 2015 deadline is getting closer and many developing countries still count on thousands of children out of school and insufficient levels of education offer. Because of these reasons, a number of governments are experimenting with new models of funding and provision of education in which the private sector plays a bigger role.
